What is A Cancer Patient Advocate?
They are primary care physicians, psychologists and psychiatrists trained in an exciting new cancer care sub-specialty. They are expert and compassionate coaches who inspire, inform and guide patients and caregivers to become active participants in managing their disease, treatments and life. Frequently upon diagnosis, cancer specialists’ move into center stage and primary care practitioners drop away. As patients go from one cancer specialist to another, both patient and caregiver feel frustrated, overwhelmed and frozen. They search for a quarterback to help them move forward. Using the PCMS as their clinical method, adding its more than 50 tools and exercises, Advocates help patients to sort through the vast array of often conflicting medical options presented to them. They work with patients to develop an individualized cancer care program; enabling them to choose and access doctors, treatments and second opinions, find clinical trials, access complementary medicine practitioners who can help ease pain and discomfort, and cut through insurance and hospital red tape.
